Spotlight Charity Program
What is the School of Rock?
We are the original performance-based interactive rock music school in the country. Our original school, founded by Paul Green, was the subject of a documentary “Rock School” and the inspiration for the movie starring Jack Black “The School of Rock”. We have been helping students reach their musical potential since 1998 and have grown to 60 schools nationwide.
Our programs cover all aspects of formal music education - theory, skill development, performance and music appreciation. When a student graduates they take with them the ability to play music with anyone, anytime, anywhere and a passion for music that will last throughout their lifetime.
Our mission is to inspire kids to rock…on stage and in life. We help our students realize their amazing potential as artists and then to put them on stage in front of as many people as possible. This is where the Spotlight Charity Program comes in…
What is the Spotlight Charity Program?
Each show season, our students, who have been rehearsing long and hard, put on fun, family-friendly, all ages rock music shows at a local venue. They have worked hard and we want them to have a great audience to play to – simple as that. Many of our students would be thrilled to have new friends and families attend their shows and so we have devised a program that is mutually beneficial to both our students and your organization.
Here’s how it works:
Your charity is selected as the Spotlight Charity for a particular performance night. During the performance your organization will be “spotlighted” with call outs from the band members and with an opportunity for a representative to come on stage and give a short introduction to the group and its mission. Your job is to bring in supporters and have a fun rockin’ family night of fun! We can do this a couple of ways:
Option 1
(Will get your organization the most bang for the effort) We issue 200+ tickets ($10 face value each and you can decide how many you want) to your organization and you sell them to your friends and family at the reduced rate of $7.50 for adults and $5 for children. (Children under 5 are always free at our shows.) Your organization keeps 75% of the proceeds from the sale of the tickets. School of Rock will provide posters and flyers that you can distribute to stir up interest. Someone in your organization will need to be in charge of organizing the ticket sale and collection of proceeds and be the contact liaison with School of Rock for settlement.
Option 2
School of Rock provides special flyers which families can bring to get the discount at the door of the event. We will then send a check for your organization’s portion of that night’s proceeds.
Frequently Asked Questions
When and where do you perform?
The School of Rock splits its performing calendar into three “seasons”. Fall, Spring and Summer. Fall shows perform in January/February, Spring shows in May/June and Summer shows in September/October.
All of our shows are at real rock venues. Locally we have performed at Jammin’ Java, Arlington Cinema and Draft House, Ned Devine’s Irish Village, The Santa Fe Café, Growlers The Sylvan Theater on the National Mall and many others.
What is the show atmosphere like?
When we do a show, our School of Rock families and students invite their friends and their parents to attend and we virtually “take over” the venue. You will see families just like yours enjoying the music and a bite to eat. In addition, we screen the audience at the door to ensure we keep a family-appropriate audience in attendance. Check out this link to see a video snippet of a past show which will give you an idea of what our shows are like.
Is this really appropriate for children?
Absolutely! The owners of the School of Rock are parents of elementary school-aged children and although the students are performing rock music we do take liberties with changing a lyric here and there and are careful about content. Our performing students range in age from 8 to 18 and, nationwide, our schools perform about 500 shows per year that are enjoyed by music lovers of all ages. Adults and children alike LOVE our shows – they are upbeat and FUN!!
Can we be a Spotlight Charity more than once?
Let’s talk about it. In addition to our regular shows, The School of Rock does have a professional band that can be booked for your fundraising events. Let us make your event a real crowd-pleaser! Details can be discussed by emailing nova@schoolofrock.com.
How do we get started?
Just give us your “yes” and we will begin the process of organizing and getting all the materials to you.
