"Playing Music" is no different. It's called "playing music" for a reason. To play music well your child needs to be on a team - we call it a band. They need to play games on a regular basis - we call them rehearsals. And they need to get excited about the "big game" - we call those our shows - done live, in a real rock venue, in front of a real crowd that bought tickets to see them.
And when you see your child rock-out on stage, then you'll understand that they're learning a lot more than just music.
